February until 3rd April
Matthew Harris and I have worked in parallel and close proximity for twenty-five years. Both originally training in textiles at Goldsmiths College, our work shares a common language that involves the construction of whole images from pieces and fragments of cloth, paper and reclaimed ceramic. This recent body of work, based on a trip to Japan with our teenage daughters continues our independent exploration of material and process.

This November is a busy month with two weekends of exhibitions

At both events there will be a varied selection of work including basketry , ceramics Jewellery and textiles and I am always struck when I exhibit in Stroud that there is such a rewarding and an appreciative audience. Stroud is also full of amazing talents and to just pitch up down the road with makers who exhibit nationally and who create a diverse range of hand made and beautifully crafted artisan pieces is extraordinary

Both originally training in textiles at Goldsmiths College, their work shares a common language that involves the construction of whole images from pieces and fragments of cloth, paper and reclaimed ceramic. Pharma's Market- a live stock and produce show, Hay on Wye , Brook Street Pottery Gallery. May 20th-June 30th
02 April 2012
Pharma’s Market is a mosaic installation, the culmination of a two-year research project exploring the contrasting imagery of historical and contemporary farming. It connects traditional ideas about food, agriculture and animal husbandry with modern developments in stem cell research and genetic modification. Although the setting of the exhibition is a traditional agricultural fair, visitors will experience an exhibition with a distinctly contemporary twist.
I have an engaging story to tell, and my characters, from life-sized ‘robo-rabbits’ to ‘space scientists’ and ‘bucolic’ farmers, all jostle for their part in the plot. My stories are derived from the real world of science and medicine, albeit reconstructed through the process of my own particular visual imagination. Using recycled china to make the extraordinary figures, the surreal sense of humour is where I have made my mark. It’s as if the pieces of china I painstakingly chip at become fragments of DNA in my own genetic rearrangements of nature.

A~Z a Face Book.
Following on from “A~Z a Hand Book” show, Cleo Mussi’s mosaics put faces through their paces. From D for ‘Dolly Bird and’ Dandiprat’ to Q for ‘Queer as a Fish’ this compact show explores simple expressions of love in a ‘Kiss’ to more complex studies of Phrenological Heads and Xrays. There is also a good sprinkling of humour to keep you thinking.

"The Dursley Donkey" for Dec 2012
20 January 2013
I have Installed an exciting commission for the newly built: Vale Community Hospital in Dursley, Gloucestershire. This new building is on the site of an old railway track which ran a light goods and passenger train service for the local community. The Dursley Donkey will now be resurrected in the waiting area, so there will be lots of interesting details of china and memories stirred to distract you whilst you wait for your appointments. With much thanks to Prema Arts Uley for organising this commission.

50/50- a Japanese Journey
25 March 2013
This exhibition was inspired by a trip to Japan, taken by two artists, husband and wife, Matthew Harris and Cleo Mussi in 2009. This Journey mirrors that of the Gallery’s Founders, Merton and Annie Russell-Cotes In 1884.
For this exhibition, Matthew and Cleo have also selected and responded to the artefacts brought back by Merton and Annie almost 130 years ago which they have incorporated alongside the contemporary objects that they have collected and the work that they have created.
Mussi's Magic Toyshop
10 July 2013
7th October – 2nd November 2013
In the basement of The Scottish Gallery we come across a mysterious mosaic world. A sanitised production line reproduction of creatures; where body-less arms create ‘Cutes’ and futuristic scientists add a creative flourish- measuring and manipulating ceramic ornaments. Life size anthropomorphic ‘Robo Bunnies’ are programmed to process, harvesting a basket of earthly delights extracting and regurgitating perfection.

All Consuming, May and July 2014
04 December 2013
Is your tank half full or half empty ?
Mine is pretty full at the moment as I have just been awarded an Arts Council Grant to take my new project “All Consuming” to both Collect at The Saatchi Gallery, London in May and The Museum in The Park, Stroud in July 2014.
Over the past two years I have been developing my next installation of mosaics. Leading on from “Pharma’s Market” this project explores genetics, economics and sustainable practices to create a new mosaic installation with accompanying notes . The resulting exhibition is a story; in the traditional sense of Folk Art, reflecting the world that we live in whilst connecting to bygone days. In this show we come across a mysterious mosaic world .
“All Consuming” is a comment and an observation on man’s evolution within our environment and our desire to consume and collect everything. From “Mitochondrial Eve” we go through a narrative of life size figures exploring energy consumption, agricultural practice, the fable of the bees, clean water, alternative energy and finally the savings bank for the Genome in the form of a modern day ark , our own perfect space ship- Earth.
May 2014 will be a busy time as I will also have work on show in the Select Trail.

Quietly intense, strikingly thoughtful, urgent yet reserved, Cleo Mussi wrestles the grand themes of human existence from inspirational idea to intricately detailed mosaic narrative – in grand style. Following on from her highly successful touring exhibition ‘Pharmas Market’, Mussi revisits the collective and personal modern predicaments we find ourselves in by taking us on a journey that spans the recent evolution of our avaricious yet all too aware species. In ‘All Consuming’ Art meets Science in a dramatic exposition that leaves us in no doubt as to the precariousness of our current situation, served with an undercurrent of Mussi’s trademark humour that at least allows us to laugh at our folly even if it refuses to offer any easy solutions.
The major pieces comment on the interaction of human life with the natural world in all its pain and vast potential. ‘Nature Recycles Everything’, reflects an overarching motif; there is nothing we grow, make, consume, use, dispose of or attempt to destroy that ever escapes the truth of the law of conservation of energy
With this opus Mussi reveals the evolving work of the demiurge – capturing our transient influence on the planet and forcing us to confront our motivations – but still allowing us to be distracted by a witty detail, a wry observation.

Spring Boody
23 February 2015
Enjoy Cleo Mussi’s depictions of Spring in all its burgeoning glory in her intricate boody ware panels, where fragments of broken crockery have been transformed to explore a world of nature’s plenty from Bunny figures with their offspring to baskets overflowing with flowers. Cleo has a very distinctive approach to her work using the medium of mosaic, believing that restricting herself to recycling objects opens the creative mind to focus on realising the potential of the materials to hand. ‘The inherent qualities of the pattern in the tableware are cropped, reshuffled, taken out of context and reassembled.’ Cleo pieces together disparate fragments and symbols to create meaningful mosaic images and stories of abundance.

Mussi's Herbal
30 September 2019
Scottish Gallery 29th Nov- 23rd Dec 2019
Cleo Mussis life size mosaics immerse you in an evolutionary and historical timeline. They explore how the British landscape has changed and evolved since Neolithic times with the conscious and unconscious introduction of seeds and plants from Europe and further a field. Waves of immigrants introduced plants and seeds for culinary and medicinal purposes and also surreptitiously as stow-a-ways on animal pelts, clothing or in animal feed. Plants naturalised and spread through cultivation or as weeds along well-trodden migratory paths and are now established as part of our diverse landscape. Often tied up with traditional folklore, fairylore, superstition and agricultural toil, these plants and weeds are now so familiar they are incorporated into our cultural history.

Mussi Mosaic Manufactory
24 January 2022
Printed to order and distributed World Wide on line from The Great British Bookshop with over 500 images of works created over the last 33 years. An LP size retrospective with 196 pages. From early beginnings in 1990, from simple tiles which evolved into large major installations of over 100 life size figurative elements.
45.00 ISBN 9781784567767 With 1000 copies only.
Cleo Mussi is a true original taking an innovative path to expressing her own ideas, by creating gestural, figurative mosaics from repurposed ceramic tableware. Working within the folk tradition, Cleo creates elegant, decorative and political pieces that incorporate the inherent properties gleaned from patterns, marks, forms, colour and text into a world of contemporary narratives. These works reflect modern ideas, with both humour and a lightness of touch. Cleos work ranges from small intimate pieces to large scale installations of up to 100, life-size works; her mosaics are in private collections worldwide, as well as in many public spaces throughout the UK.
Cleo Mussi is a maverick ceramic artist marshalling historical shards of china into contemporary stories that reflect the world around us. Cleos book will take you on a journey of discovery from of her life size gestural figures to small intimate works, all drawn from repurposed ceramic tableware. You will explore narratives mapped from her personal journeys through history, science, art and nature, exploring the surface and the underbelly of key themes in anthropology and humanity. You will meet her characters, that include large anthropomorphic robot rabbits, spacemen, quack doctors and historical figures who all jostle for a position in her tales. As well as seeing her working methods and how her practice has evolved over the last thirty three years, you will see the rigour of her research, her humour and the lightness of touch in her creative practice. Cleos works are in private collections world wide as well as in many public spaces throughout the UK.
